Executive Committee Technology Immersion Workshop
Business Situation:
As a prelude to the annual business planning/budgeting process, the Executive Committee (top 12 business leaders) of a global pharmaceutical company wanted to increase their technology literacy level with respect to ‘new’ capabilities, processes, tools, etc. and how they could benefit their individual business functions and the company as a whole.
Solution:
Using an interactive, gallery-based approach, a business technology immersion experience was created where multiple technology topics were shared (e.g., Agile development, Data Sciences, Human-centered design, Enterprise platforms, AI/ML, Robotics, etc.) along with internal technology project success stories.
The workshop also included ‘keynote’ conversations with industry and academic thought leaders and cross-industry executives applying technology in innovative ways to drive business business success.
Outcome:
- 60% of the executives increased their technology-related budgets the following year to potentially realize more business value.
- The annual corporate strategic business strategy planning/ budgeting template was updated to include a dedicated section on Technology Strategy/Enablement.
- The Immersion workshop was designated as an annual Executive Committee event and results shared globally at the operating management level.

Commercial Rollout to Support
Business Situation:
A bio-tech was planning for it’s initial product launch and required a compelling business case to share with their executive committee and Board of Directors. Skepticism and hesitancy existed among the stakeholders on how to proceed to address both immediate and longer-term business needs.
The question of whether a ‘basic’ (just the basics) or ‘robust’ (basics + nice to haves) approach was posed to the project team. Specific focus was placed on the required investment, potential business value and timing.
Solution:
By framing the need as a 10-part narrative using real characters (the Rep, the HCP, the CFO, the Tech team, Patients, etc.), the decision-makers were engaged emotionally through a company avatar who narrated the story. Chapters included – The Market, The Protagonist, The Mission, The Turning Point, The Real World, Journey to Success, Projected Impact, etc.
This approach included explaining complex, technical and financial information in a more accessible way that created a memorable impact.
Outcome:
- The selected rollout approach (basic) was approved by the executive committee and Board.
- The robust plan elements were converted to a release plan for future enhancements.
- The CEO commended the project team on their creativity and business storytelling was adopted as the preferred approach for certain types of company communication.
- Formal business storytelling workshops were provided.

LMS Project Turnaround
Business Situation:
A global pharmaceutical company with varied learning needs, initiated a project to implement a Global Learning Management System (LMS). Their aim was to meet compliance requirements, enhance training execution and increase colleague knowledge sharing across the enterprise.
However, towards the end of the project, it became evident that the selected solution ‘missed the boat’ with respect to selected solution and implementation (e.g., scalability, integration, ease-of-use, reporting, etc.).
Solution:
Engaging a Strategic Project Advisor (SPA) to work with the PM/project team, a new project blueprint was created. The new story specifically addressed the full picture — strategy, process, technology and people goals of the effort.
The SPA coached the PM and guided the team through – 1) generating an amended set of goals and business requirements, 2) reselecting and implementing a new solution, 3) overseeing customizations, 4) addressing people change opportunities, 5) defining reporting needs.
Outcome:
- A new strategy blueprint was created that resulted in the selection of a new LMS solution.
- A cross-functional project team was engaged for the implementation with an external LMS subject-matter expert (from the selected vendor) to ensure a successful outcome.
- The SPA role was transitioned to lead a dedicated change management track to ensure proper communications and organization readiness for the new solution.

CRM Project Assessment and Value Rejuvenation
Business Situation:
In a bid to modernize its customer relationship management (CRM) system, a mid-size biotech company invested significantly to advance its current solution by adding additional functionality, reporting, etc. The project was deemed ‘successful’ by all involved and the team was commended for delivering the project on-time, on-budget and delivering what the project charter outlined.
Within six months, it was discovered the new functionality was not being widely used and no measurable value was derived from the large investment made.
Solution:
A Strategic Project Advisor (SPA) was engaged by the project sponsor to work with the project team. The suggested approach included a reassessment of the effort identifying and documenting a new strategy to unlock potential, measurable business value associated with the planned/required CRM enhancements.
Emphasis was placed on confirming the potential business value from functionality already included/ planned as well as key gaps not identified in the original effort.
Outcome:
- The project reassessment revealed that more than 50% of the functionality included in the initial solution was driven by the IT function suggesting its use on behalf of the user community.
- A business-lead project team was assembled, and a formal requirements phase was executed with the help of the solution vendor to identify the prioritization (based solely on business value) of required new functionality.
- A 3-year roadmap was created.
