Every major AI platform already knows this. That’s why—despite their polished tone and confident outputs—they all include some version of the same quiet disclaimer: “This AI tool can make mistakes. Check important information.” It’s a strange paradox. The most powerful tools ever built for decision support begin by warning you not to trust them too much. That warning is not just about factual accuracy—it’s about epistemology, humility, and leadership responsibility.
But the risk isn’t just in trusting the output. It’s in how much we trust the system with our inputs. As AI platforms become more integrated into strategic workflows, many users are willingly feeding them sensitive questions, confidential context, and proprietary data—often without fully understanding how that information is stored, reused, or remembered. Even Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, has expressed surprise at the level of trust people place in these tools—not just with what they’re told, but with what they’re giving away.
This represents a dual erosion: of judgment and of trust. For decades, we assumed the mainstream internet—Google, Apple, Amazon—was mostly safe. To support this cultural shift, organizations must encourage their teams to ask second and third questions, not just accept the first answer at face value. AI-generated outputs should be routinely cross-referenced with primary source material or reviewed by subject matter experts. Teams must be trained to distinguish between AI’s confidence signals and its actual accuracy or credibility. In this new environment, trust must be earned—not automated. - Design for Constructive Friction
When no one is invited to push back, AI becomes a megaphone to oneself. Strategic cultures must embed mechanisms that deliberately slow things down (enough) when the stakes are high (enough).
One way to do this is to require multiple, diverse prompts before acting based on AI-generated insight. Another is to assign “red teams” whose explicit role is to challenge AI-derived conclusions. In high-stakes situations, organizations could also establish formal review roles that vet AI outputs before they are acted upon. The goal isn’t to introduce unnecessary delays—it’s to prevent uncritical clarity from accelerating poor decisions. - Operationalize Uncertainty
